Ecology Letters. 2021;00:1–15. wileyonlinelibrary.com/journal/ele | 1 © 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. INTRODUCTION Phenotypic plasticity, the ability of genotypes to express different phenotypes in response to the environment, is recognised as one of the key mechanisms by which plants can cope with the fast- changing climate (Hoffmann & Sgrò, 2011; Jump & Peñuelas, 2005) and other global change drivers (Matesanz et al., 2010). Knowledge of broad- scale drivers of phenotypic plasticity is therefore of utmost importance if we are to understand and predict plant responses to global change (Valladares et al., 2014). Although plants are generally plastic (Sultan, 2000), spe- cies and/or populations differ greatly in their levels of plasticity (Dostál et al., 2016; Gianoli & Valladares, 2012; Sultan, 2001; Valladares et al., 2000). These differences between species and/or populations may arise due to differences in selective pressures favouring the evolution of increased phenotypic plasticity, but also due to fac- tors limiting its evolution (Alpert & Simms, 2002; van Kleunen & Fischer, 2005; Valladares et al., 2007), which are rarely considered. The main factor known to select for the evolution of increased phenotypic plasticity is environmental het- erogeneity (Alpert & Simms, 2002; Vázquez et al., 2017). There is substantial evidence that climatic variability is positively associated with plant phenotypic plasticity (Alpert & Simms, 2002; Carvajal et al., 2017; Gianoli, 2004; Gianoli & González- Teuber, 2005; Lázaro- Nogal SYNTHESIS Global trends in phenotypic plasticity of plants (DOI)
